Every single one of us is in pursuit of happiness. Everything we do, we do for happiness. When you get old and look back at your life, you look for those tiny little moments in your life when you were enjoying yourself to its fullest. If you find those moments, you feel victorious, but if they had been absent or you couldn’t find more than a handful of those buoyant memories in your past, you get disappointed and regretful.

So if you want to feel contented and fulfilled when you look back at your life, and if you want to feel happy at the moment, continue reading:

1. Work out

Working out is one of the best and fastest ways to cheer you up. it does magic to your state of mind. Working out, in any type or form, is extremely beneficial. By training, not only will you achieve a fit, sexy look, but also you will benefit from the serotonin and dopamine (the happy hormones) release that happens during and after exercising. It doesn’t matter how intense you train or what type of training you do, when you move more than you normally do, you will be happier than before.

Note: It’s best to avoid working out close to your bedtime, especially if you’re not an easy-sleep-goer. You don’t want to get too excited before bed as it doesn’t let you go to sleep.

2. Watch The Office

The Office (starring the legendary Steve Carell, a goofy version of John Krasinski, Rainn Wilson, and Jenna Fischer) is one of the best and funniest TV shows of all time. If you haven’t watched it already, good for you, you got something that can change your life. If you’ve watched it before, no problemo, watch it again.

Oh, one thing, though: if you haven’t watched it already, anticipate going through a transient depression after ending the show.

3. Drink Coffee

This one may be the most straightforward option. It can work as a drug since you drink your – preferably black – coffee, and after a couple of minutes, you will realize that your jolliness level has gone up a notch or two. Keep in mind that caffeinated beverages are best to drink as soon as and as far as your bedtime since they can impact your sleep. So to not miss out on your sweet, baby sleep, drink your coffee early.

Note: Some people can’t tolerate high, or even small, levels of caffeine, so if you get extremely jittery or anxious afterward, do not drink or find the caffeine level you can tolerate.

4. Conan O’Brien

Conan O’Brien is one of the funniest comedians in the galaxy. He can make you laugh just by his pale skin and ginger hair and doing nothing else. So if you feel down and need a fast-and-furious dopamine rush, watch him or listen to him anywhere you find him. He is available in many different situations: clips from his interviews with celebrities on YouTube, his appearance on other talk shows, playing video games, traveling, doing silly stuff, and his podcast Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend (I’m planning to talk to him on his POD. He talks with fans around the world on his podcast). So give him a shot.

Note: I’m also a fan of Ricky Gervais, but his sense of humor is a bit dark and so much more existential; Conan’s, though, is much lighter and best for the times you feel pessimistic and hopeless.

5. Set Small Goals

Try to set some realistic small goals. An objective in your life keeps you hopeful and motivated and having hope itself makes you happier. You don’t even need to achieve the goals you have set, just knowing that you got something to think about and something to pursue makes you happier. For sure, you can accomplish your goals. That way you will have another source of happiness that can last for quite a while.

For example, one of my goals is to become a better writer, and just thinking about it and imagining a near future where I’m a better version of my writer self keeps me motivated and hopeful, thus happier.

6. Listen to music

That’s one really fast way to hype you up. Music can sparkle some dazzle on the sometimes-dull life and make it beam colorful rays of light. Music is the cure for all of us downed by the struggles of living. Music is life.

7. Sleep well

This one may not be as immediate as the other ones because you need to experience 6 to 8 hours of quality sleep to feel fresh and happy afterward, but nonetheless, the benefits and mood boost you get outweighs the longer time you need to become a happier person. And if you develop the habit of sleeping well, you are the winner in this sleepless world we live in. These days, because of all the stress and bad habits, we don’t get to sleep enough, and more importantly, deep regularly. So we have turned into cranky, irritable humans. But by correcting our sleep patterns, we can become cool and groovy people again.

Note: if you have insomnia and difficulty sleeping, do not try to force yourself into sleeping, and do not obsess over it. Simply having this idea of good sleep in the back of your mind is enough. Don’t worry about worrying about your sleep.

8. Have a chat

We are social creatures, so we need to be around people. Remember the quarantine during the pandemic and how maddening it was to be encaged within the walls of our houses? Socializing is a great way to feel good. Call a friend and have a little chat and maybe exchange some gossips, or if you’re not the calling-type like me, massage them on any platform you have. Short or long conversations with the people you care about can really change your mood, even if you don’t realize it at the moment. Or if you’ve got the energy, you can go out with your friends or family, which is even better. So don’t forget kibitzing with people.

Everyone deserves to be happy.
